there is no need for instant replay in baseball. umpires are out there getting calls right. last nite in the dodgers / brewers game a homerun by (idk remember which dodger) off of carlos velenzuala was originally ruled a HR, but after the umpires discussed it, it was deemed foul (the correct call)
and people always say "those close calls could be eliminated with instant replay"
this is for them
close calls are part of the game. it keeps the game exciting. do you kno how boring it would get if they stopped to look at every bang-bang play. noone would watch baseball anymore. instant replay would ruin the game
and even those calls that the umpires miss, those are part of the game as well. everyone knows that if the umps make a bad call, they make up for it on the next play. its part of the game
instant replay would be THE worst thing to happen to baseball since the 1994 strike

I think instant replay would be a boon for baseball under the right circumstances. No, you don't use instant replay on every pitch or every play, there's no need.
The idea that's been floating among the coaches is to have a couple of guys that are up in the booth watching the game. If there is a critical call -- or miss call -- they'll radio down to the umps to have them review it. It would be used only in the critical situations like in the game where a runner was tagged out trying to steal second but the umpire, who's view was obstructed, called him safe (and later admitted it was the wrong call, but he didn't have the angle). Or on fan interference when a fan sticks his glove into the field of play when a player had a chance to make a play on it (anyone remember the Cubbies?).
Usually the umpires are 100 feet away from fan interference plays and therefore cannot make an informed judgement.
Another option would be to do something similar to football. Give the managers 1 instant replay per game, use it or lose it. In instances where it's a solid tag and a bad call (like the baserunner), it would take less than 30 seconds for the umps to clearly see if he's out or not. Case closed.
For those people who call themselves "purists" and don't want instant replay added to the game, which better keeps the spirit of baseball alive; blatently wrong calls that cannot be overturned, or 30 extra seconds that allow the umpires to make the right call?

No instant replay in baseball. Umpires get 98-99% of the calls right. If there is a call they're not sure on, they get together and discuss it to make sure they get the call right. Instant replay really isn't going to improve on that. The biggest problem I have with instant replay in baseball, though, is that if the powers that be think it works really well, then they may want to expand it which could eventually turn into a machine calling balls and strikes. That way the strikezone every game would be regulated throughout MLB. That would ruin baseball imo.

Instant replay doesn't fit the ambiance of baseball. It would disrupt the flow of the game in almost the same way as those rare instances when a fan runs on to the field.

it would make the game too long. It is a slow game, and the close calls are part of the game. It like gives you a reason to "hate" on the umpires. A manager can already challenge a call, talk to the umpires about it, the umpires can discuss it among themselves. 98% of the time they get the calls right. There are times they don't, but that is human.
instant replay just isn't for baseball.

I am a baseball fan and they should use instant replay for critical calls that could change the game....replay us a good thing especially when you have the human error factor in sports.

It's hard to say exactly how, but instant replay takes something away from the game. Can you imagine how much slower a baseball game would go with instant replay? They'd be challenging every pitch!
Baseball is a slow enough game as it is. Doesn't require much athleticism besides the occasional sprint.

On one hand........the game is already SLOW
on the other hand.....it would slow it down even more
I would love to see it with a definite time limit.....I can't imagine it taking longer than 30 seconds....we always see the TV replays right away

IR would rarely, rarely make the game better.
I could live with it in extremely tightly-defined circumstances, mainly involving calls at the outfield wall or the poles.
