i thought they came from little fat chinese men who sit under trees in the mountains of the far east, not power grabing pariahs and scare mongers

Well, prophecies have always been made from time immemorial. There have been numerous prophecies in the puranas of hinduism. There are prophecies in nadi astrology also. And of course there are prophecies in the quran and the bible. And all these prophecies of different religions seem to have similarities. But, there is no day of judgement. It's just to scare people and lure them to get converted.
Even nostradamus has predicted the end of this world cycle. He has predicted about volcanoes, and tsunamis and earthquakes. And the same has also been predicted in the puranas as the end of this Kaliyuga. But, nostradamus and the puranas haven't stopped there. They have said, that once the earth is washed by heavy rains and floods and quakes there will be new life again which will be totally peaceful for a thousand years to come.
Even in the great Indian epic, Mahabharat, the rishis have predicted about the nature of life in Kaliyuga to Yudhishthira. And if you read them, you would feel that they make a lot of sense. If man's intuition is developed, then why can't foretell. Anybody can do that, if they work to improve their intuition.

Prophecy is such that it is written in a way that is not apparent. The future is not written in stone, but events can be foretold. Take for example the works of Nostradamus. He was a medevial prphet who foretold most of the things people take as prophecy. His works are available online and offline. But some of what he has prophecied have never come to pass as the events preceeding the prophecy were a "fork" in the road. Either this will result or this will result. Not both.
Can we reliably predict the future...yes, if only for 3 or 4 days.

There are gradual earth energy changes that will be making some physical/material happenings...our weather patterns are constantly changing. But see it within the spirituality of the individuals you deal with on all societal changes.
