The reason that you want to get it checked is because as long as it's good and solid or sealed, it poses no threat. Once it starts to decay, it can become airborne and that's what you're trying to prevent. So having it checked regularly can keep you from having to removed it later. Removing it will be very very expensive.

Asbestos was used within over 3000 different products. Asbestos is formed within the veins of rocks. There are six types of asbestos the main Chrysotile (White), Amosite (Brown), Crociodlite (Blue), the less used types Fibrous Actinolite, Fibrous Anthothilite & Fibrous Tremolite. The usful properties of asbestos is that it is resistant to heat, errosion and chemical attack. For these reasons asbestos was a revolutional building material mainly used throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Asbestos was eventally outrightly banned in 1999 when the asbestos proabition regulations banned the use of all absbestos containing materials. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 are the present regulations under umbreller of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

It depends on what you mean by asbestos in brickwork. There will be none actually in the brickwork itself, but it may be present in cladding boards,render,artex,lagging...the list is endless. There are three main types of asbestos, though the most commonly occurring one is Chrysotile. The worst one you are likely to encounter is Crocidolite, where only one or two fibres of that stuff in your lungs can do real damage.
Check the yellow pages for asbestos surveyors near you if you're genuinely concerned you have potential risks from asbestos products. After all, what's the couple of hundred pounds it might cost you for a survey compared to your or your family's health?

Because the lawyers want more class action law suits so they can buy more pro sports teams? Asbestos is another good product that got a bad wrap. I do feel for the factory workers that are having health issues from exposure before they knew about the risks. However, as a product in use it is no risk. It is only hazardous if inhaled. My question is - If asbestos is so hazardous why is it used in microwave popcorn?!!! How many people eat that w/ no problems (yet)? I sure am glad that I only eat things that God put on the planet.

Even brick will wear down and cause dust in the air. If that dust has asbestos in it people can be breathing it in and eventually it will make people sick.
