A 1 1/2 inch bolt fits a 1 1/2 inch nut. Or do you mean the wrench size for the nut is 1 1/2.
7/16 wrench size = 1/4 bolt size difference = 3/16
9/16 wrench size = 3/8 bolt size difference = 3/16
3/4 wrench size = 1/2 bolt size difference = 1/4
15/16 wrench size = 5/8 bolt size difference = 5/16
Therefore you can see that wrench size is not proportional to bolt size.
Many of the bigger nuts have differing bolt sizes for a given wrench size.

Bolt size is 3/16 inch smaller than wrench size--for a 3/8 inch bolt, use a 9/16 wrench and so on. A nut that uses a 1 1/2 wrench would be a 1 5/16 bolt.

In this case the question is not size per se, but thread. Metric? Standard? Coarse, or fine?
