I don't think I'd say that you have a mental illness.. because I don't think this is causing heavy distress in your life and that is one of the qualifying factors. You just have an overactive mind.. granted you need to learn some focus and ways to control your minds or you need to address the problems causing you stress before this BECOMES a mental illness.. and it very well could if left unchecked.. but as for now I'd say you are still on the healthy side of mental health.
When your brain gets overactive try to take a breath and calm down.. avoid caffeine and other drugs that may stimulate you...when you start to think of the worst case scenario ... force yourself to remember that you have seen this before.. these events have happened many times and so far they have turned out ok more often than they have turned out bad... the odds are in your favor.
In the end.. just try to relax.. if you truly can't get to that point.. then talk to a councilor.. if that doesn't help at all.. then it may be time to talk to a physician.

Be leery of any diagnosis offered on the Internet, even if well-intentioned. Racing thoughts, excessive worry and gloomy ideations can be symptoms of an anxiety disorder, a depressive disorder or they can be related to an organic disorder (meaning something is off-kilter in your body). It's prudent to be evaluated by a physician versus a counselor, as an MD will consider all potential causes.

It could by a lot of things, but two comes to mind:
1) attention deficit
2) obsessive compulsive disorder
Many people do what you describe, and it is often not a mental illness but just a personal trait. If it bothers you, see a doctor...

sounds like depression and a bit of obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd) go see a counselor at a local mental health center they can really help !
