I keep on getting an icon in the right corner that says I am running out of disk space. The problem is that I am always in the middle of doing something important when this happens and the icon dissapears. How can I access this myself??

thanks

First and foremost, you need to back-up all your important stuff to a CD/DVD or another hard drive. Once that is done I would go about cleaning up the drive of non essential programs, messages, documents, etc.
I have been extensively using flash drives for all my back-ups on my dsktop and then transfer them to a large hard drive at home.
It works great and flash drives are quite reasonable in cost.
When the drive is cleaned up you should be rid on that annoying pop up.
Once a drive reaches 75% to 85% full everyting gets tougher to preform as well as not being able to defragment.

Open My Computer, right click on C: Drive, click properties. It will show you total space, space used, and space free.

You need to either delete a bunch of files, or get a bigger hard drive. I would suggest getting a bigger hard drive. Then, just clone your current drive to the new one.

Your hard drive is nearly full so either you need to uninstall and delete some stuff that you no longer need or you would need to buy a bigger hard drive.
