It created an intense competition in the 50s and 60s that further separated the two powers; however, this cooled during the detent period. It also galvanized the workers to be more effeiciant and get to the moon. If the cold war wasnt going on it is arguable that it could have taken another ten years to get to the moon.

the space race was all part of the cold war, as well as the arms race, hence all the advances in weapons of mass destruction and space technology. soviets were first to orbit earth with sputnik in 1957 and us was first on the moon with apollo 13 1967. space tech was used for missiles and later on reagan proposed strategic defense initiative, dubbed star wars 1983
