There is a lot of online content on IndyCar.com and Indy500.com including real-time scoring data. I believe they also have video, telemetry data, and maybe even in car audio. As the race starts pick your favorite or someone you might think will win (like Dan Wheldon) and listen to them early as they work on the car and plot out their strategy. There are so many dimensions in the race that if you get into it then it just unlocks that much more.
The best place to be is the track - nothing beats them blowing by you at 220+ into the turns!!

Get a list of all the entrants, cut that list up and put all the names in a hat. Then have your group draw out names until all of them are gone. Also have an entry fee for each name drawn. Then assign different prizes for different categories. Winner, second, third, first out, first crash, etc.
