I don't need to access it, just see what is happening on that screen in case any alerts come up etc

If the 'other PC' is running Windows XP, you can use the built in feature called 'Remote Desktop'.

You have to configure the other PC as a host, and you use the Remote Desktop Client software on Windows 95 or later to view and control the other PC.

You mentioned that you were only interested in alerts, but there really isn't a way to say 'show me the screen of the other computer when alerts come up'.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) takes over the other computer and will log anyone out in the process.
VNC and tightVNC are downloadable and free for personal use will allow you to connect into a running session on the other PC. I use tightVNC to control pre windows XP systems and RDP for XP. Depending on what type of alert you want to know about you may be able to use event viewer on your PC and connect to remote event log.

There are a couple ways. WindowsXP has a built-in feature called "Remote Desktop":
