define non-living

a mother who has just died can give birth to a live baby ... or at least a caesarian section can remove it

Katherine, it is possible for a brain dead (ie dead) woman to conceive a child while she is dead. It's just very expensive for the health care system (not to mention a little bizarre). It wouldn't be allowed.

Brain dead is the same as dead.

It might NOT be the same as non-living.

No.

Addressing the other answers to this question:

1) A brain-dead woman was once living and conceived her child while she was alive. All that needs to occur for the birth of her baby is the physical removal of the child from her womb.

2) Viruses are unclassified as to whether they are alive or not. As for 'disease', 'disease' is actually a virus, bacterium, protozoan, or a particle similar to a prion. All these pathogens can replicate (bacteria and protozoa are living, viruses are unclassified, and prions are proteins in the body of an organism - they are not living beings, but are instead organic molecules which replicate in much the same way as DNA and RNA replicate).

Technically, it happened at least once. This is a fact. It may have happened many times, but it appears that only one lineage has survived representing the common ancestor of all living things on Earth.

So far, all mapped genomes show that everything is genetically related from the simplest yeast to elm trees to dolphins to humans.

All the discussion regarding a brain dead person conceiving or delivering a child is not in the spirit of the question in my opinion. But what the heck do I know?

But to Oronico's point: define life. It seems axiomatic, but it can be tricky.

As far as I know Viruses are non-living things. Look it up I cant quite remember but they give birth to disease which I guess is a strech lol. But I know they have kept people who are technically dead on lifesupport for months so thier baby can be born. Or if you just killed someone pregnant and they give birth right after which is sick as hell.
