First off let me say that I am 28 not 13 so dont come back to me with you are too young to understand it. This was one of those "great" movies that I had never seen so I decided to watch it last night. After an hour I shut it off due to boredom. I found that I just didnt care about the character Jake LaMotta. I didnt care about his story. I couldn't see the movie moving in a direction where it would grasp my interest. I must say that the acting was great but the story just didnt get my attention. It was filmed in black & white which made it kind of depressing and old looking but I suppose that was the point. Also, the boxing scenes were done horribly. They didnt look real nor were there good sound effects. Anyone else agree? Anyone disagree? If so, what did you like about it? I would be interested in reading your take on the movie.

I'd agree. The 80's were just not a good decade for Scorsese until Goodfellas, which was actually released in 1990. Jake LaMotta was a despicable character, and even though that's ok in some films, he just really had no redeemable, or even interesting features. He wasn't intelligent, he wasn't charasmatic, and he wasn't even a good guy. The ending was very telling, with LaMotta still not giving up on trying to entertain, long after his star had burned out.

Raging Bull is the best boxing movie ever, Robert De Niro sparred over a hundred rounds with Jake La Motta in the making of the movie, in the fight scenes De Niro threw the same punches in combinations as La Motta done in real life for each separate fight... De Niro put on over 20 kg in his own body weight to play La Motta in movie when La Motta was getting older...Brilliant Movie

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Back in 1980, the fighting scenes were considered very realistic and violent. They are a bit more realistic than say "Kung Fu Hustle" or Matrix style fighting.
The acting is amazing. It is like you are watching a documentary. Very natural talking and reactions. Not forced or "Acted".
The fight scenes are cool because each one was film differently than the last one. Different film stocks, some with moving camera, some with a stagnant camera, some in slow motion, etc.

I am probably getting this all wrong. But if you are really interested, you should look up the critique on it online or in a book like FILM ART.

I liked it better than you did, but I'm not sure I would classify it as the best movie of the decade like Gene Siskel did. I'm not even sure it was all that oscar worthy, the acting was great but I agree that the character of Jake LaMotta was hard to like or root for. I did enjoy how "tough" his character was like when he took the beating from Robinson. I did watch it all and was a bit dissapointed too.

Some very great movies were not in color which does not make them odd. I can't imagine the very best, Casablanca, in anything other than black and white;
