The $15,500 maximum is just your pre-tax dollars, and does not include any match provided by your employer.

401K's are complicated. Normally, companies match on a pretax basis up to 15% of salary. It is really dependent upon the plan. You can contribute more than that on after tax basis ( lets say your favorite great aunt died and left $25,000. Dependent on the plan, you could contribute that money to a 401K for investment.
