totally disagree with 1st answer...

you can use all the drives, case, psu, and OS from the old pc and just buy a MOBO, CPU, and some better RAM...

buy the part's online...tiger.com, newegg.com

you could get a decent 2x3800 for 65.00, an MSI or biostar mobo for 30-70...and 1g of ddr2..667 for 30-50. so for about 100 buck's you could have a brand new computer...

so...why would you pay more for a bunch of stuff that you already have..don't need...don't want and is on a short trip to the landfill?

By the time you compare the price of purchasing and installing a new systemboard, processor and memory to the price of a new PC, it will discover that it is not worth it. The new PC may actually cost LESS then those parts...

But if you have a "mom and pop" computer store in your area that builds PCs, you can probably get a unit without hard drive, CD and floppy, and then just move those over. (But again, it will not save you enough to be worth it).

Plus if you move that har drive over, that is alike buying a new car and putting you old engine in it. The hard drive will be a time bomb just waiting to die.

Replace the unit, and give the old one to a friend, sibling, enemy (as old and slow as it is), or use it as an emergency standby.
