They are the same thing. A thinkpad is just a IBM/Lenovo brand name of their laptop.

All thinkpads are laptops. All laptops are not thinkpads.
Thinkpads are well built with very durable components. Generally business oriented so workhorses without all the gaudy bells and whistles. Not suitable to play Quake XXVI on, but spreadsheets, word documents, visio run very very well.
I own one, and would choose it over other brands.
