Rain occurs in a very turbulent environment. Because of this rain drops usually vary in size by a great deal. As the drops fall they collide with other drops and get bigger, if they get too big they break up. So, by the time the drops reach the ground there is quite the difference.

Thunderstorms will vary the greatest, while light steady rain will vary to a much less degree.

Try putting colored construction paper out in a shower of a second or two (so a hand full of drops land on it) the wet spots will give an indication of the drop size.
