In other words, it is spy-ware that is keeping track of where you have been so that advertisers can more efficiently send you more spam.

example:
yahoo stores bt.com cookie on your PC for the purpose of advertising and tracking and because it's bt's cookie that's whay it's remote because you never visited BT' site
