Russia was the first country to put a person in Space(Yuri Gagarin). United States of America was the first country to put a person on moon(Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin) were the first people to set foot on moon........Michael Collins was the other person in the mission but did not set foot on the moon............

The Russians were the first to put a man in orbit around the Earth, and the first to send an unmanned space craft to the Moon, but they never sent people to the Moon. The only people to ever go to the Moon (so far) are Americans.

The Russians never put men on the moon. They gave up once America got there first. They had a manned lunar landing program but problems with the launch vehicle put them too far behind to keep up with America. So they switched their focus to Earth orbital manned missions and unmanned space probes to the planets.
