Money = Publicity!
The other reason is because everyone expects them to do well, so when they are not they get a lot of extra attention.
***My suggestion, support a team with HEART *****Go Red Sox****

There's no question that the New York Yankees are the most storied team of all professional sports. And being in the Big Apple hasn't hurt. They are constantly put under the microscope about everything they do... good or bad.
When it comes to winning pennants and playing in the World Series the St. Louis Cardinals are second with 17. Real baseball aficionados know that. Most people think it's the Dodgers or Giants because they are on the other coast and get more hype, but not true.
If the Cubs won the next five World Series' they might get more hype in the Baseball world, but not in New York. Unless, they beat the Yankees... and then it would be all about how the Yankees lost rather then how the Cubbies won.

The Yankees have a huge following, and there are those who haven't jumped off the bandwagon just yet all around the US. Spotlight the Yankees and Red Sox, get the big ratings.
That will continue to happen until either the Yankees fall out of perpetual playoff contention, and/or until the AL East produces another powerhouse with either Baltimore or Toronto like it has done with Boston.

Main reason #1 -
ESPN. That is right. ESPN is an east coast network that thinks that because 85% of their on air talent are either Boston or New York fans, that the rest of the country cares as much as they do. That is why instead of showing you a great game last week like Dodgers vs. Padres - you get Yankees against Tampa Bay! Their bias puts an average regular season series of Boston and the Yankees into an absurd amount of hype. They act like it is the World Series when it is simply another 3 game series in April.

Because when people think Yankees, they think Dynasty. Plus they have so many stars on that team its not even funny. Also after being so dominant, it shines light on the matter when suddenly the dominance fades away. Besides, any team would get all that press coverage if they shelled out $28 million for a guy who will be active for 4 months, not only that, but has a stipulation where he only really has to start half the games.

New York is the media captiol of the world, with more than 500 outlets there between TV, radio and newspapers. Great expectations were put on the team because of the payroll, and just as many people are happy to see them do poorly as do well. Now, couple that with so many TV and radio talking heads being lazy and it being easier to retred a story than going out and finding one. Besides, have you ever told someone from New York that anyone from outside the five boroughs couldn't care less about their beloved Yankees? Just watch their utter disbelief.

You are a web baseball columnist. You have to write a daily, 1000-word piece.
Your editorial goal is to get one million hits per day.
Do you write "Royals about to turn it around"?
Or do you write "Yankees don't really suck that bad"?
Consider the home markets -- which column will get one million hits?
Actually, as long as "Yankees" is in the title, the rest of the words don't much matter. One could write "Yankees suck less than the Royals, and here's why" and only discuss the Royals' suckage and it would still get hits.
Market advantage. You want eyes, you highlight the Yankees, the only team in baseball, possibly in professional sports, that can get headlines -- HEADLINES, mind you -- for NOT doing something.

They are in the most populous city in the US, but then so are the Mets - so that isn't all of it.
but haven't you noticed that NYC believes everything that happens there is of interest to the rest of the world. And since the corporate offices of all the major media outlets are based there the media usually sees it that way too.
They have a long tradition. They are owned by a colorful owner that wants to win all the time. They have a tradition of spending money to build a winning team.
