Do you or do you know someone that suffers w/depression or any other mental illness...you definitely are welcome to add your opinions...it would be appreciated to NOT be non-understanding about this subject!...Many ppl suffer w/depression, or other mental illnesses..
btw...IT IS A REAL MEDICAL ILLNESS OR ISSUE!!
Just as having diabetes, heart disease, or cancer...NONE of these ppl would NEVER choose to have ANY of these medical issue or illnesses!! Please try to be considerate of other ppls feelings when you answer this Q plz! Thank you for your input & opinions.
**For those that are curious...Yes, I have a son w/mental disorders, and having to deal w/him I also have suffered w/depression myself...that definitely doesn't mean either one of us chose for this to be part of our lives!**
Have good day!

You're so right.
The depression that passes down (or around) a family might not be genetically passed (though it can), but is also passed on by learned behaviors which children adopt by merely being exposed to them long enough. We grown children have carried our learned behaviors and limitations into the adult life. Depression is so common as to be overlooked as a warning signal (as is anger, fear of love, critical self-judgement, etc.)of worse things to (possibly) come. Many people who aren't depressed, or don't recognize their depression, think someone must simply "snap out of it" and get over it. It really doesn't work like that. Everybody each has a particular set of coping skills that we grow up with. Being depressed indicates the coping skills are too primitive or dysfunctional to be more effective. Therapy and meds can help (or not!), as does the support that comes from friends and contacts which share compassion and empathy.
My best wishes for your endurance and ability to glean and share the love and goodness of each day.

my cousin is bi-polar, and won't stay on meds.
I have suffered years of depression, my therapist says it's due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I'm un-medicated but working through therapy.
My sister had terrible depression after her third child, and went on medication, and is off the meds and better than ever.
I hope you don't get any insensitive responses. Some people are happier living in denial though.
Best wishes to you and your son. â¥

I suffer from depression on a daily basis. And you are right, if I had a choice, believe me, I wouldn't want to. I wish I could be happy and upbeat, but it's not chemically possible every day. It's also genetic. My mom also has a panic disorder. It sucks, but you just learn to deal, eventually.

Yes, I suffer with dysthymic disorder, which is mild depression. It's tough at times, no one can relate much to you and tend to get angry at you for it. Hope things work out for you and your son!
