The term was originally derived from the term "hat trick" which usually involves three repetitions. Since a golden sombrero requires four repetitions (of strikeouts) they decided the term should include a bigger hat. So sombrero was chosen. Golden = 4, Platinum = 5, Titanium =6.

A four-strikeout game has long been known as a Golden Sombrero. I suppose 5 whiffs deserves an upgrade.

Where "Golden Sombrero" came from, who knows... it was probably a lark.

0-3 with 3 K's = Hat trick
0-4 with 4 K's = Golden Sombrero
0-5 with 5 K's = You can use platinum or whetever makes it more than golden. Its pretty bad.
