A negative deflection indicates that the recorded wave has traveled away from the electrode and a positive deflection means it has traveled towards it. Also moving the electrode toward or away from the central axis changes the magnitude of the wave. This is why placement of the electrodes is so important - you cannot compare two ecgs unless the electrodes you are comparing are in the same relative position on the body.
