It definitely should be legalized.
1. It grows and is usable straight out of the ground.
2. Animals eat it.
3. With little alteration it's lush oils can be used in fuels, foods, medicines and who knows what else.
4. 100% of the plant is usable (fuel, paper, clothing, etc.).
5. Has no known harmful/fatal effects.
6. Easy to grow & harvest (grows like WEEDS!)
7. Calming & joyful effect when internalised.
8. Promotes a healthy appetite (helps chemo patients keep food down).
9. It has an exhilirating aroma.
10. It used to be grown and harvested around the 1900's in abundance without opposition.
11. Dentists previously used to prescribe it as recently as the 1960.
12. It has no adverse effects on our ecosystem.
13. It would provide jobs with little or no skills required.
14. It's cheap and guaranteed to be a profitable investment.
15. So it can be taxed and regulated.
16. So it can be studied and put to more uses.
17. Because the original intentions for making it illegal failed and were misconstrued.

Marijuana should be legalized because millions of people in the U.S. use it.. It helps to treat the side effects of many medical problems. It helps to relieve a stress filled day, without resorting to alchohol. It is not addicting (contrary to popular belief.) It is no more addictive than chocolate or anchovies. It doesn't lead to death, like alchohol or cigarettes. Pot was legal until our government was talked into .banning it in the early 1920's, by corporations who couldn't find a way to process it into cigarettes economically, because of it's seedy and stemmy nature. In WW1, and WW11 pot was grown all over the world and used in such products as rope for our Navy, clothing, even oil production. The new emerging oil companies of the time saw it as competition for the plastic industry, which uses oil to make thier products, like rope, and clothing. The drug companies needed to outlaw it, because prior to the turn of the century (1900) almost 50% of the drugs prescribed by doctors of the day had marijuana in the prescriptions. But, since marijuana could be grown so easily, people wouldn't need to buy the "new" chemical concoctions made by the drug companies. So the corporate giants of the day saw it as competition that could be made illegal by hefty contributions to the ruling politicians of the day, who obliged with the legislation making a weed illegal to possess.
Marijuana, if made legal again, could be taxed as much as alchohol, and cigarettes, creating a huge source of income for the government. These millions of dollars in revenue could lead to maybe propping up Social Security, or making health care affordable. Maybe even paying down the national debt.
Legalization of marijuana, as a RECREATIONAL drug, would make it on the par with cigarettes and alchohol, which is controlled by government rules as to where, and to whom it is sold to. No one wants kids to smoke marijuana, (except the drug dealers who now distribute it) so why not make it harder for kids to get it? I think it is the government's responsibility, to it's citizens to make this happen.
Marijuana is a gateway drug. There is no doubt about this. Why it IS a gateway drug is more interesting. Marijuana is a popular drug. To buy this drug, a person must go to people, who are not regulated, who see only the profit motive, who in all likelihood have other illegal drugs to sell, and have no scruples. Contrast this with a scenario where pot is sold at liquor stores, so you go to a place that is government regulated, who still has the profit motive, who definately have other drugs for sale, (alchohol, and cigarettes) and has the force of government to be scrupled.
Law enforcement would get a big break from having to investigate, prosecute, and incarcerate pot dealers, because they would be eliminated. Probation agents'loads would be considerably lightened. Agriculture, worldwide, would have a new crop they could legally raise, replacing coca and opium in some places. Here at home, farmers could once again grow hemp, and marijuana as legal crops. Hemp fibres could easily replace coal as a renewable, clean fuel. It can be made into clothing, hats, and a number of wearable items. Oil can be produced from crushing the seeds, for making things that are made of plastic now. This could even help bring oil prices down, because it can provide the same benefits of oil, thereby making it a natural clean alternative.
Smokers worldwide, could eliminate the paranoia often associated with smoking herb, and finally exhale, legally.

Medical marijuana is already legal in a lot of states. It shouldn't be used as a recreational drug though because it does change people's brains after smoking it over long periods of time.
Everyone I know who has smoked it over several years is twisted. They can't remember very much, and they make stuff up and actually believe it.

The only reason it isn't is because the government can't profit from it because you can grow it in your back yard - oh and prob because of some medical reasons, but hey, they sell cigerettes don't they and the government makes a fortune from it!
