Why do people begin smoking when there are no benefits and only disadvantages? Its unnatural to inhale smoke so I'm thinking people must really want to smoke very badly to smoke on a regular basis.

In my case it was because my friends smoked and my parents smoked. Back than it was socially exceptable. They didn't talk about health problems from it. and they were about 30 cents a pack. It was so different than. You could smoke anywhere. grocery stores even in hospitals! they put you in smoking and none smoking rooms in the hospital. It was nothing to see cig. butts stomped out on the floor in the grocery store isle. You could be a minor and buy cigs.
It's only been in the past 10 or 15 years that changes have happened. So I guess the short answer is society/ignorance.

I hate to admit it but I started for the same reason as pretty much everyone else. I wanted to fit in with my friends who smoked. I don't know if you smoke but just incase you don't...when you first start you get a little buzz off each cig. And by the time that goes away you're hooked. But I wish i'd never started.

Peer pressure? Thinking it makes them look more grown up?
The big screen glamorizing it? I recently stopped smoking and within 2 months time my ability to take a very deep breath had increased dramatically. Did you know that the lungs can completely heal themselves in 5 years. After just a few months of quiting, your chances of dying of a smoking related illness drops in half.

My dad told me that he started in boot camp and the ones who smoked were able to take smoke breaks. Well needless to say, everyone started smoking.... (This was in the 50's)

I'm proud to say that he hasn't smoked cigarettes since the 70's and he quit cold turkey.

Peer pressure mostly, The same with Marijuana!

Everyone smoked when I grew up and you always got cigarette breaks! No more!

It is also one of the most addictive and nasty habits in the world. It is very hard for most to kick it!

Some people naively believe smoking's cool. They learn though, the hard way, that smoking isn't too cool at all.

Most smokers start at an early age, so you shouldn't expect a good reason for why they do it. I started when I was a kid, because I just wanted to do something rebellious.
