That song was originally done by Lori Lieberman, and it was initially a poem. It was turned into a song after the fact. Also, it was written based on her seeing Don McLean .(American Pie) And yes, it's a great song.

i don't like to break up either upside down, sideways, softly, hard, or any ways. its good that things just mellow out and we just find someone else but we are always friends and we can go to each others weddings oneday.

whenever i hear it,makes me think of the kid in the movie "about a boy" who sings it on the school stage,then Hugh Grant rescues him when it goes wrong!
