Because it's just so powerful, that imagery ~ almost as though her whole life had been drained away right there in that one day, and the way the realisation begins to dawn on the others, what they've done to her.

In that day they travel in a way from childhood (unthinking cruelty, unawareness, innocence) to adulthood (consequences, regrets, knowledge of the power of their own actions, and the powerlessness to undo their own actions).

They haven't entered the future and what they do with it is up to them, the whole voyage of their lives lies ahead, but also behind. What will they do. And she?

Hope that's right. I haven't read that story for over 20 years ~ find it so strongly poignant and achingly cruel, but it's stuck in my mind. Great story.

It was the perfect ending. He was trying to show how short life is and how we need to slow down our pace to enjoy life.
