There has been a lot of media coverage recently about a top policeman who said that blanket CCTV surveillance is actually making British society more unsafe by breaking down the bonds of trust that need to exist for a society to operate efficiently and harmoniously. Do we actually need 1 CCTV camera per 14 people in Britain? Does it actually make you feel safer, or maybe even the opposite?

no. This is bad. Because gradually, this leads to a 'big brother' society. Less control is needed, no matter the price. I don't know about the UK, but American Civil Rights must be upheld. The process should be reveresed now, before it gets any worse. I don't want to go to war with Eurasia :(

A couple of points on this subject
1. I think it is policing on the cheap...it would be more helpful to have Officers patrolling in areas rather that everyone being watched..all it does is help to provide evidence after the event not prevent crime in the first place.
2. I have posted several comments about the McCann case and how it is being hyped up, but if there had been as many cameras in the Algarve as in Britain, it might have been resolved by now, so there are always a number of sides to an argument.

It is without exception an infringement on our civil rights. Peeping toms are better qualified to make me feel safer. You can't scratch your **** without someone knowing about it. It's a big brother society and that is truly terrifying. I am not a paranoid person but this is becoming a government who is power crazy and wants control of everything. Since the first CCTV cameras, crime has not improved, only risen anyway so what is the point. I think it will only take away the skills of the police eventually as they will become to rely on them a sa necessity.

That's crazy, so that's really going down in the UK, eh? I definitely think I would feel very unsafe. People would only be worried about being caught on film than the actual person next to them. So, what i'm trying to say is it seems to make a person much more irrelevant to the person next door. We'd stop caring about eachother and more about the camera and what it caught. It would have to make things colder between the people, less easy to interact, tell jokes, f*ck around-all vital to a healthy society. I think its coming to the US next!

Why should we feel safer when a crime is committed and the CCTV has caught the person but the picture either is not allowed in court or the quality is so bad they say IT WASN'T ME........................ I really think there's something more sinister behind the blanket of cameras now used in our country.

No. In fact, the opposite. After all who is watching is more to the point. What guarantee do we have that those watching are not bad people that can create havoc in ones life.

No. The idea that if you do nothing wrong you have nothing to fear is a fallacy. We have everything to fear from interfering and control freak politicians who, if they were doing their job properly would not have to rely so much on surveillance. If we have nothing to fear why have mp's just voted to exempt themselves from the freedom of information act? Sadly people, we have everything to fear. If you believe we are safe in the hands of the type of self seeking, control mad politicians we have in this country you are deeply mistaken.

cameras are not their to make you feel safer.i really dont know where you got that idea from.they are their to spy on you so the government knows what every one is getting up to.plus the fact that nobody likes being a cop so with the decreasing numbers in the force cameras are an easier and cheaper option.

I guess I feel safer if they are watching the bad guys that much. But, if anybody watched me that much I would feel more sorry for them than any feeling of security that I am suppose to feel.
