from stalking non political people and getting away with a bit too much...not neccessarily by being killed as the Russians do,maybe just being dangled out of a sky scraper window or having their legs broken or something next time they invade peoples' liberties

Come on, Dan...they've got away with it for so long. Why? because governments have let them do so...it's fair to say the media in the UK to some extent runs whatever party in power. Remember the nasty scuzzy attitude of The Sun throughout the eighties - and in the nineties they decided to enrage a Northern city (though it must be said, the same city seems to have shrugged it off and returned to page three and the likes). The Daily Mail has taken the 'nasty' prize over the past few years, with The Mirror, Star and the less serious rags stalking and sneering when it suits...and to make their punters 'appy, prizes on every second page, like a week in France (the country the same papers hate) for a quid, the latest 40DD lass - or a Natiional Lottery take off - which is won by NOBODY...or better still, a chance to walk around the EastEnders site with a couple of the actors who have decided to get out of bed to greet the visitors!
As for the rest of the press, it looks like they've taken bits of attitude here and there, from the right wing spreads...even the Guardian. The only paper that has independence of a sort, is indeed the Independent.
It's a quid pro quo situation now...whatever paper supports the government in power at the time, they will get gongs and wee prizes. Is it not too late for the media to be pull down somewhat? It seems so.

Certainly seems to be a need for restraint. The style of reporting on people's personal activities rather than going for the real issue is worrying. I really wonder what they Government is getting away with, when the Press only want to disclose what a politician was doing with whom.

I would welcome a bit more researching for a real story, and less pandering to the tastes of the lowest.

the press are animals - they get away with anything. isnt it ironic that police need warrants and have to go thro tons of red tape to do surveillance etc but press just storm on in, take pics and flash them all over the papers and thats ok...

no free press should be restrained in any way shape or form.

but that said to deserve that they have to be willing to act responsible something which is very much lacking in out media today

When did the British people have any "liberties"? I thought you gave them all up already? Theres more surveillence cameras in London than Englishmen!

You gave up the death penalty
You gave up fox hunting
You gave up gun rights

What's left?
