I am "retired" due to no fault of my own...
I am disabled and have been for 5 years...
I had back surgery in 2002 and never healed...
I walk with a limp and hurt to where I cannot work any longer...
I live on Social Security and have a handicapped sticker in my car...
I miss working because I had a fun job working at a newspaper...
I also miss the money I was making because now I am living on half of what I used to make...
It isn't easy to live like that because you still have to buy groceries, pay on medical and put gas in your car...
Prices keep going up in every field and no one cuts you any slack...
I don't like staying at home because I often see so many household projects I want to do, but physically I cannot and financially I cannot...
I have no real social life because all my friends have their lives to attend to and I just slow them down...
Most of my days are spent making up for lost sleep I had during the night and trying to get in a comfortable position to be out of pain...
When I do get out of my house I get tired often and quick...
Like my mother always said, "it is hell getting old"...
She is bedridden in a nursing home...
So my life of being "retired" is not pleasant...
I am basically out of the loop of a fast paced lifestyle and making money to save and travel...
I worry a lot that Social Security and Medicare may be used up by the time all you young folks are my age and ready to retire for real...
I hope all of you have some kind of savings plan started...

I'm yet to retire since I'm only 53 and may work for another 10 years if health permits. However, I can write about my papa who got retired after 26 years service with PAF back in January 1971, about 36 years ago. He is in a frail health with two mild strokes and lives with my mom in our own house.

My papa born in 1923 is now 84. He would wake up early in the morning at around 5:30AM and perform his morning prayers and other rituals and finish his breakfast by 9AM, which is basically in purée form (smooth pulp of vegetables or fruit etc). Thereafter, he would go through the morning newspaper and watch TV news. Since our parents are living with my younger bro with his family in the same flat, papa gets time to see the grandsons prepare for school.

Papa would sometimes ring us to get the latest news about us and also continue watching TV programmes which are now-a-days run on almost 24-hour basis.

He would take bath with some assistance and then have his mid-day prayer and lunch. If there are appointments with doctor then one of us (4-bros and 2-siss) would take him to the clinic either in early morning or in the evening time as per the availability of doctors.

In the afternoon time papa would invariably take nap for about one hour and then he will have his afternoon's cup of tea and prayer. The TV in our drawing room is kept switched on and with remote control papa can switch to watch his favorable channels. He is also like me, watches mostly BBC, CNN and local news.

In the evening time again some kind of purée for his dinner and then again he will have night-time prayer and then go to bed at around 10:30PM.

Sorry to have elaborated a bit longer hope you could get to see how the retired person in our part of the world gets family attention even though pension wise he could hardly keep him financed for a few days only.

PS. I’m moved by reading Aspen’s Answer (above). I do hope and pray that she gets well and that her old-age worries are minimized soon.

Additional Data:
This is in response to above post. Thanks Aspen for correcting me.
