The best *guitarists*of all time (for me) are defined by their originality in sound. You should be able to pick them out just by hearing part of a solo. For that reason, I choose:
1) Slash - Guns n' Roses
2) Kirk Hammet - Metallica
3) Jimmy Hendrix
It's so hard to narrow it down like that! :-)

2. Stevie Ray Vaughn - Listen to 'Texas Flood'.
3. Kurt Cobain
Now, don't bash me for my last decision. I know it seems a little odd to choose Kurt as being a great guitarist, by IMO he was. He had that grungy style that no one could duplicate, and he always pulled it off, and it sounded great.

there are many bests in any lists. its all a matter of taste as well. its who do you like over who do i like. eric clapton will long be remembered as it stands now. in the past was jimi and svr. there are too many to single out just one person. amazing no women stand out in all of this too.
