Morphy was a genius who knew how to get a lead in development and go on the all-out attack. He could get his pieces to co-ordinate well together and bring unbearable pressure on the enemy king. He would happily sacrifice several pieces to get mate.

Probably only Bronstein, Tal, Fischer, Keres and Kasparov among modern players had his flair for attack. However his games are nearly all 1.e4 e5 openings ("Open Games") and what you won't learn from Morphy is how to play the Sicilian or the KIng's Indian, nor how to play positionally nor how to win endgames (very few of his games ever reached the endgame, they were over too quickly!)

Paul Morphy is the greatest open game player in history. Start your review of his games by looking for games where he played the Evan's Gambit as white. They are all masterpieces, and you will quickly see why so many love to analyze his games. His combinations are beautiful, and he completely demoralizes his opponents. He is one of the few people in the history of any sport to be completely unrivaled in his time. He retired mostly because he couldn't find any real challenge.
