It's all part of the general dumbing down of everything. University Challenge is the only intellectual quiz left. Mastermind has dumbed down considerably - witness the choices of some of the specialist subjects.
Eggheads isn't too bad. The questions can tax your general knowledge sometimes - but it's so slow-moving!
Fifteen To One was good, with a high standard of questions, but that's no longer on.
Millionaire would be better if more people got beyond £32,000, when the questions start getting quite tasty - sadly, very few do.
Some of the current, so-called quizzes wouldn't be out of place in a primary school.

Quiz shows now seem to be for the celebrities only - and as most of them are doing it for charities, it makes the programme look good.

If a regular person wants to get on these shows, you need to be either completely nutty, or an egghead!

Bring back the old games when the prizes were more laughable, but at least it made fun viewing - everything now is about MONEY, and it spoils it.

Nowadays, it's do something silly for money, do nothing at all for money, or there's the Weakest Link, which is more about Anne Robinson's school marm behaviour.

But the old quiz shows are now a nearly dead art. Apart from Uni Challenge and Mastermind, which aren't mainstream anymore.

Sadly, in this country (the UK), people don't like to see a 'smart *rse'. TV has dumbed down so much, that it's now seen as cool to be thick! In many of the quizzes nowadays, you see contestants trying to give the false impression that they are just guessing the correct answers purely because they don't want to come across to the viewing public as 'know-it-alls'.

The simple answer to Your question is: We, the audience, became too smart to be entertained by the usual glib repartee and pseudo-intellectual questions that are put foreward as a "challenge" to Our mental abilities.
There are only just so many questions that can be asked before it becomes, not merely repetitive, but boring.

There's still University Challenge and Mastermind (though current series has finished but will no doubt be on again in the Autumn). Other than that it's just Millionaire...if you can put up with Tarrant?!

Apparently you haven't watch Jeopardy on ABC, this is a quiz show, but the contestants five the question to the answer.

The nearest thing there is these days is Egg Heads on BBC 2. But you are right, it's just too easy these days. Also, why does every programme/show you watch have a phone in now, it really irritates me!
