throughout the show jack was shown in the city with a beard, got his arm broken or something, got hooked on pain pills, was going back to his doctor job. Was that the past? why did they keep showing that? or was it the future and he had gotten off the island? because he saw Kate and talked to her, ...I thought kate and jack met after the crash? why did they keep flipping back and forth between the island scene and jack with the beard running around town? any help?

It definitely was a flash forward. This time Island views were flashbacks :)
The answer of who died depends on who came from the island with them. I assume some people decided to stay in the island, Locke, Ben, Rose-Bernard(?), Daniella might be the ones staying back.
If Naomi's ship really caused a trouble in the island and if these people decided to leave the island, I would concentrate on either Ben or Locke (they both had health problems fixed by the island and also both have no family and friend in this world). Jack would feel bad about both's death, because they both warned him about not leaving but he did (Kate wouldnt worry about both)
If these people did stay in the Island, it can be anybody but Hurley, Claire, Sun, Jin, Juliet, Desmond, Michael, Walt, because they all have loved ones, who would come to the funeral. .
So as far as I can think Sayid and Sawyer are the possibilities. The one who died shouldn't be liked by other island habitants either. So Sawyer is a high possibility!
I guess Kate doesnt want to see Jack because she still is a criminal and she is hiding her real identity and doesnt want to see anybody who knows it (?!).
Rather than who died and how, I truly wonder how Jack turned into a drug addict and why he wants to go back so badly!

Its a flash forward as evidenced by:
1. Razr phone that was made after 2004, when the plane crashed.
2. Jacks FB never had a beard
3. Jacks FB never was an alcoholic
4. If this was a FB, then why did Kate and Jack act like strangers on the island after the plane crashed?
As for the casket (for the 30th time), the casket is TOO SHORT to be any adult we have met yet. It is not Locke, or Ben, or Juliet, or any adult. I don't even think it is Walt because he looked too tall.

I suppose it could have been Locke in the casket. He was miraculously able to walk despite having broken his spine before crashing on the island; it could be that after being taken off the island (most likely forced off), that he was once again paralyzed. Locke might do something drastic like have his legs amputated and say "They weren't doing me any good anyway...". Thus the shortened casket.
Future Jack is a mess and it probably wouldn't take much to make him cry. However, I could imagine how Locke's saying "You aren't supposed to do this" (while Jack is calling the freighter off shore) could be haunting Jack now that he realizes leaving the island was a mistake.

that's the whole point of the show to keep you asking questions. I have no idea who was in the casket and jack with the beard and kate were in the future. Locke told jack that they were not supposed get off the island, so we see that they did and now for some reason jack wants to go back.

John Locke (a.ok.a. Jeremy Bentham) is in the casket. As for Jack desirous to flow decrease back, i assume that's probable as a results of fact he feels guilt over leaving all the different survivors on the island, considering the fact that he promised to genuinely everyone he replaced into gonna get them off the island. it is purely my opinion however...

That was the future, after they were off the Island. No idea who was in the casket. Maybe Locke?

All of his flashbacks were in the future, after them getting off the island. It never showed who died and was in that casket. Just another thing for us to ponder and think about!

instead of the usual flashback, it was a flash forward (of a POSSIBLE future i would presume)...
he told kate that they needed to get back to the island, that they werent supposed to leave.
as far as the casket, i wonder if it was locke or juliet
jack cried alot, and it has to have been someone they both knew from the island
it has to be someone kate didnt care to see and that jack wouldbe sentimental about.
no one visited the viewing of the deceased (locke?)
but jack was crying (juliet?)

I know a few people with TiVo and they paused to read the clipping Jack was reading and it said something about a "James" and "dead" "found in a loft". So I'm assuming it's Sawyer...It would make sense. Jack didn't love or hate him, so not family or friend would make sense. Someone also said that the "him" Kate had to get back to was her son....The island does make people super fertile...Hmm...
