The composition of brake pads is a closely guarded secret, different manufacturers use there own secret ingredient. In the past carbon and asbestos was used but these day alternative man made fibres are used. The type and ration of materials is determined by the application of the pads, for example high performance brakes use materials that offer much better hot running than normal pads. However the high performance pads are a lot harder than normal pads and wear out the brake discs rapidly.
On very high performance cars the normal steel disc is replaced with a disc manufactured out of high temperature carbon.

Mineral fibres (NOT asbestos) and formaldehyde and similar resins. Very long life compared with old asbestos linings, but all the wear is on the disk instead

Ceramic and Carbon are proving to be the brakes of choice, but one thing is for certain, Asbestos isn't in there.
