At a given lattitude, at what angle from the horizontal should I orient solar cells?

That is, to get the maximum amount of energy in a year by keeping the plane of the panel most normal to the rays of the sun? At the equator, you'd want them exactly horizontal, in the northern hemisphere, pitched south some amount. How much?

In the UK the typical angle would be approximately 30 degrees on a South facing roof.
