Namely because the water is too cold. Hurricanes and tropical systems generally need water to be about 80F to form. However, this doesn't mean they can't move north and effect the North Atlantic. Hurricanes are formed by cooler wind in the upper atmosphere and the warmer wind formed by the seas (if the seas are warm enough).

Because the seas around north Atlantic are quite cold, hurricanes couldnt form.

To form a hurricane, the sea temperature must be 80 degree or higher, then you need a low pressure aloft and favorable conditons to form what is first called a tropical depression, as the winds near the center speed up above 35 mph, it is called a tropcial storm and given a name. above 75 mph it is called a hurricane.

Sea surface temperature should be around 28 degree celcius for hurricanes to form.In North Atlantic the sea surface may be less than this.This may be the reason.

Hurricanes like warm water. The warmer the water, the stronger they get.
