Here's how my dad used to do it: Buy a few gallons of distilled vinegar. Put at least a 1 quart down each drain ( sinks, tubs, showers, commodes) just before the last person goes to bed at night. Flush every drain with hot water in the morning.

You should not attempt to clean them. Anytime you put anything in your water system you are endangering a lot of people, "everyone that uses the same water supply" if a back-flow situation were to happen. If you cant stand the thought of it, either replace the pipe or add water filter's to your faucet's.

If the deposits are purely debris from the tank i might get the water tank replaced with a sparkling sparkling one. In old properties tanks in the loft can get very nasty. If whether the subject is via limescale construct-up then you definately choose an in-line water conditioner put in to assist shrink limescale deposits.

If your talking about your water pipes, you can't clean them without changing them. Do not, repeat, do not, put anything in them. This is your water system. Learn to live with it or have it change to copper or something else.
