In my experience, controlling behavior waxes and wanes, but if a person is becoming increasingly controlling I would say that it has become an addiction. Here are some reasons why and how people act controlling:
WHY
To control behavior and emotions
To control how people treat and feel about them
To control the outcome of things...uncertainties
They employ the same anger and critical model of control that was taught to them as children
HOW
Withdraw
Anger and violence
Procrastination and tardiness
They avoid love & disavow feelings
They stay in the thinking head to avoid feelings.
They respond to criticism with compliance
They use care taking as their primary form of control
They resist others attempts to control them (authority)
They control others feelings by putting their own feelings and needs aside
All of these behaviors are intended to protect one from some form of pain...of rejection (job loss, divorce, death of friends), of engulfment (children, work stress, maratial problems), of failure (death, illness). Yet these very behaviors cause the most pain for they abandon the Self...

Insecurity perhaps because you've aged so well they have thought of the prospect of someone taking you away . The person may be experiencing a mid life crises , that's common and could cause the behavior change . Maybe they have realized how dependent they have become on you and need to be a little more self reliant to feel better . Just throwing out some idea's .

Unhappiness inside. Some folks think that controlling the outer world is a way to make the inner happy and peaceful. Not so much.

Insecurity can do that to a person, they need to always feel in control. I have had an experience with a person that likes to control all around him because he hides behind what he truly is. If he can control his outer world he can hide behind that since his inner world is out of control..

Are you sure it's controlling, or possibly just more experienced? With age comes experience, what you are calling controlling may be someone trying keep you from making a mistake that they had made years ago?
A bumper sticker said,
"With age comes experience,
But sometimes age comes by itself!"

as creatures of habit
many of us become set in our ways
and are less likely to step out of our comfort zones
i challange myself outside of my box
whenever possible
but - truthfully - fall back into my own rhythms
with that mind set
it makes comprimise more difficult
in a relationship
one or the other or both will try to control

Less and less control of their own lives. They can't control themselves or their situation so they have to compensate by controling others.

Isolation from the outside world....being too confined with ones significant other can cause this. Why do you ask? Hmm...
