Intelligent means a person is 'all around' smart -- "she's a very intelligent person."
Brilliant is used more to describe someone who is talented in one particular area -- "he's a brilliant scientist."
In England they seem to use the word 'brilliant' the way we (the USA) use 'wonderful.' "Oh that's brilliant!" is the same as "Oh that's wonderful!"
