Shouldn't every person who is able to work be working, doing something, instead of getting a check in the mail every month from the U.S. Government for doing nothing?

Since 1964, when "the Great Society" federal welfare programs were established by president Lyndon Johnson, the U.S. Government has distributed over $10 Trillion dollars to welfare recipients. Even with all of that money being paid out, we have more people on welfare than ever. Isn't this whole program a complete failure and shouldn't it be scrapped?

Well there's a lot of people out there that can't work. I have a friend who has seizures several times a day. No way can he work" What do you suggest about that? If we could get that 3 trillion dollars back into social security the the government has borrowed it would help. By the way the money to support the troop build up in Iraq is coming from the same social security program that Bush wanted to fix. No I don't like the idea that some people are out there drawing check's and never worked a day in their life, so what are we going to do bring in illegal aliens to make the problem worse--after all there families can get free health care and free food

No, we should not get rid of the welfare system. It was designed to help people that are unable to help themselves. Like ....children, disabled people (many from fighting in our wars), mentally handicapped. The problem is that so many people have learned to work the system and take advantage of what was set up to help the unfortunate and underpriviledged. They should put time limits on it, and also have stricter guildlines into checking people out. The fault lies within our government and how they do not spend time doing follow up calls. Just like all of the children that die in our welfare system, that nobody follows up on complaints. They don't have the time.

I agree, I think that it needs to be looked over. I don't think we should scrap it all together. I have no problem helping my fellow Americans and lending a hand to someone in need. I believe we need to draw a line. You can only be on welfare for so long. Have a panel of people to check ones progress to get off of welfare. It's a good system if people don't abuse it. We have to much of that going on now! It isn't a salary....it's to help you and your family get by. Not live on! It needs to be mandated and used for good.

Yes, welfare keeps poor people poor. Welfare is a socialistic approach to getting government to fund bureaucracies.

Its really sad. 70% percent of people that are on welfare openly admit that they do not even try to find jobs.
