if its coast to coast over the air AM radio youre referring to, i think its more of how much wattage the station is pumping out and what if any diection the signal of it is, some of the great AM powerhouses such as XERB in Mexico used a 250 thousand watt transmitter, others such as WKBW in Buffalo New York used 50 thousand watts,WKBW was heard at night as far away as Greenland and was picked up in Ireland, it was said that you could drive from Los Angeles to New York listening to XERB and not once lose its signal.......
