You can put a few small tetra's. Neon tetra's and rummy nose are nice and colorful. I hope that helps. Good luck

Male bettas are normally only aggressive towards other bettas although they can be aggressive to fish which have long fins like angels.

There are a few rules you will have to follow if you want additional fish.
1. A good rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water.
2. Most fish besides goldfish require a constant water temperature around 78 degrees. To keep the temperature constant you will need to purchase a heater and thermometer for the tank.

White clouds are a good fish to put in there, because they are small fish, that could live in a unheated tank with the betta. Also their fins are not long, so the betta shouldn't pick on them. Just keep in mind the one gallon per inch of fish rule, when buying additional fish. Good luck!

I have a 5g tank with some rasboras and ghost shrimp and a betta. The betta loves to chase the ghost shrimp now and then. So far he hasn't attacked any of the fish or shrimp.

For a 5g tank I would only stick with tiny schooling fish like neons or rasboras.

in a 5 gallon i would personally just stick with the betta as the only fish in the tank. especially if he's been in there a while alone.

you can consider shrimp however as others have mentioned, ghost shrimp are the cheap option, but being small they can end up as betta lunch. other shrimp include cherry shrimp, amano shimp or even bamboo shrimp. each of these guys eat slightly differently so research them before you buy.

if you don't have live plants you could try some of the non-plague snails such as apple snails, spixi snails or freshwater nerite snails.

There are fish that would do fine with bettas but since you tank is so small, the only thing I can really recommend are ghost shrimp. They're not fish but they're cheap and will help keep your tank clean. Or an ornamental snail.

Try a corydoras catfish, but only if you have a filter on the tank. These keep to the bottom of the tank while the betta stays closer to the top and middle levels. You can also keep an African dwarf frog or adult ghost shrimp.

The rule of thumb is that you can have one inch of fish per gallon of water (usually excluding algae eaters).

so with a five gallon tank, you can have five inches of fish. Betta fish are usually 2-3 inches long, which means you have room for 2-3 more small fish.

Avoid fish with long fins or fish that like to nibble on long fins.

Some possibilitites include: Mollies, tetras, and some types of catfish.

As I said, the rule does not include algae eaters as the y tend not to move too mich so you would be fine to put in a Pleco or snail also.

Basically any fish except fin-nippers(eg zebra danios), Fish of the same colour(guppies, gouramis), fish with aggressive personalities and fish that don't fit the conditions for the betta. Catfish are pretty suitable, tetras and cherry barbs and other small fish(but not too small)are okay too.

Male bettas are VERY aggressive.

Im not quite sure if that is a good idea.
Be careful.
