...uh, that's "DIRTY Mary, Crazy Larry", from 1974, and starring Peter Fonda, Adam Roarke, and the beautiful Susan George. One of the best drive-in style, action-packed, motorhead road pictures to hit the screens!!!
Anchor Bay Entertainment released a beautiful print of the film on DVD, a couple of years ago, with all the bells, whistles and extras worthy of this most excellent flick!!!

If it's Dirty Mary Crazy Larry it didn't take place in the desert but down south. But the very end does include a train smashing the car with all 3 protaganists inside. Good movie, underrated.

1970's classic- "Bloody Mary, Crazy Larry".
Can't remember all the characters, but the driver of the Dodge Charger was Peter Fonda.
Some (about 85%) were filmed in Lodi & Stockton California.
