I had several different roommates. Most of them I got along with fine -- one I didn't. The best roommate was one who had similar interests so we actually hung out together -- we became good friends. The others were fine, but we sort of went our separate ways. The one I didn't get along with? To tell the honest truth, I don't even REMEMBER why we didn't get along. She was rather high strung...
Having common interests is important. Also, when I was admitted to the college they sent me a form to fill out about a roommate -- it asked a few very basic questions, such as do you smoke, are you messy or neat or do you like the window opened or closed when you sleep? I guess they have learned what things can really cause friction!

It's important to have a good roommate in college. I liked to go to parties and sleep in so I never scheduled a class before 11:00 am. I had a roommate that was kinda sketchy and had weird girls over while I was out a parties and would come back with these random girls in my room, that really sucked. On the other hand it worked out because whenever I had girls over he couldn't say anything. Point is you should try to get a friend to room with, if that isn't an option most schools have roommate matching forms that help you find a decent roommate that lives like you.
I would avoid people that are the opposite of you, it's gonna suck. A lot of my friends got stuck with random weird roommates and it was always awkward going to their room because you never knew if their roommates would be there.
One last thing, if you get stuck with a loser talk to your R.A or R.D (they probably won't care though) or find a friend that has a loser roommate too and switch it up. That really does work out for everyone then.

She was a good roommate in the fact that she was fun and we got along well together, but she was a bad roommate in the fact that she always had a parade of different guys in and out all the time and sometimes I couldn't get into the room when I needed to.
