I teach 7th grade and one of my students smells like an otter! How can I help her without hurting her feelings. She is very sweet, but this offensive otter smell is often distracting to the other students. This is exam week and I don't think that she is showering because she thinks that not showering is "lucky" somehow. She is kinda crazy and she comes from a very ugly town. Please help me help this beautiful girl before her classmates realize that she is the reason that the classroom smells like an otter! In case you did not know, otters may be cute, but they are smelly, very smelly. HELP!

you have to pull her aside. dont let many people see you pull her aside either, and make sure no one is around when you talk to her. tell her that you have noticed she has a very distinct smell and you wanted to talk to her about it before it caused her embarassment with other students or in life or whatever. tell her some people naturally have stronger scents than others and its nothing to be ashamed of but she needs to stay on top of it. let her know that not showering is bad for a womans health and she can get yeast infections or whatever else. and let her know she cant let her craziness define her as the stinky girl that smells like otter.

Just call her over one day, you can talk outside so that no one can hear her. Just tell her that she's going through a period in life where her body is acting differently and that she should use deodorant. Or tell her parents to talk to her about it. Try to convince her that she's a smart girl and will do well on the exams and that taking a shower will freshen up her mind and make her think better, rather then be dirty.

Hope I could help! :)

Oh crap, i can tell u dont have a 7th grader at home.
they go thru this weird stage, u got to push and push to
make them do better.
its probably she has no deoderant and hormones are raging
at this age.
Just give her a bag tomorrow with deoderant in it.
they can take 10 showers and still smell like an otter at this
age, its a hormone , growing up stage.
they got to learn, deoderant and brush teeth more often.
I suggest deoderant and chewing gum .

tell her about the health risks of not showering when the topic comes up again, and that not showering isn't lucky in any way, without mentioning that she smells like ***.

if that doesn't work just tell her that she wreaks in the nicest way possible, because if u don't, some other kid is gonna tell her. Or maybe try contacting her parents and telling them about the situation, if she really smells that bad.

There is really no gentle way to tell the girl. I would ask her mother to come in for a conference and talk to her----or you could ask the school nurse to counsel the young lady on hygiene issues. You would be doing her a favor!! Dona G.

Talk to her parents or maybe give a class discussion on the importance of bathing regularly. Then she wouldn't feel singled out.

Talk with a counselor or the school nurse. Then you could send her one of those places during PE, maybe, and give her a gift bag of body wash, deodorant, and scent or powder.[or shampoo if she needs it.]
The nurse/counselor could help you explain about body changes and the 'aroma' associated with it. Do you know her home situation? Maybe they have very limited resources -
water, clean clothes.

Talk to the counselor or vice principal. They can give her a "care" package confidentially. I have had a similar issue.
