I officiated. The groom was referred to me by a former co-worker. The wedding was last Spring, and was an outdoor ceremony, by a pond in a city park rose garden. I had never met the couple prior to the wedding, and had only spoken with the groom by phone. When we arrived, I discovered that the bride did not speak English. As we worked through a method of translation, the family members and friends arrived. Finally we were ready to begin. I was somewhat anxious because the weather was overcast with very dark stormclouds.
The ceremony got underway with me speaking to the groom, and then to the bride (with the groom translating my words and her replies). About 2 or 3 minutes into the ceremony, the rain began. So we were standing in a park, by a pond, getting rained on, holding a bilingual wedding ceremony, and I thought to myself, "What else could happen?" That's when I heard the sound of a band; lots of drums and brass instruments. As it got louder, we had to practically shout at one another to be heard. Then it became evident that there was a road running behind the pond, with a marching band coming our way. Evidently, there was a benefit march going on that day, and the band was leading the way for maybe 400 marchers.
Here's the cool part. As the band approached, the musicians realized that there was a wedding in progress. (I was a bit conspicuous in my clergy robe.) The marching band stopped. They stopped playing, and they also stopped marching. The walkers behind them caught up, saw the situation, and they stopped too. We probably had 450 on-lookers at this point besides the wedding party. As the ceremony concluded, and the couple shared the traditional wedding kiss as husband and wife, an enormous cheer went up from across the pond. And as the couple began to recess from the rose garden, they were serenaded by a marching band. Now, THAT was a wedding I will never forget.
