I preferred Trane after they bought out the G.E. residential line. Trane built some really good commercial and industrial equipment but their residential equipment was always over engineered and a flop. With industrial equipment there is nearly always an operator/mechanic on hand whereas with residential equipment there is not. G.E. built only residential equipment and they were the best I ever ran into. Trane bought the whole operation, engineers and all. I was working for a G.E. dealership at the time of the sale, as service manager. We picked up the Trane line and found that they had not changed anything but the name. We sold and serviced Carrier as well and I can't knock Carrier, it just seemed that Trane had less problems although there were few problems from either. I have sold and serviced Rheem/Rudd and they are solid peices of equipment. No frills and usually a little less efficient than Carrier or Trane. Lennox has been around forever and they are dependable but were not popular in the areas where I worked. (south MS, LA, AZ)

I install and service these units and I would recommend Carrier or Bryant (it is made by Carrier). Also Trane and Lennox are very good units. But with all brands the installation is very VERY important! Be sure to use a competent licensed and insured contractor who has been around a while and who will stand by their work. Cheapest is not always best.

Out of those three I like Rheem the best. It'll cost you less than a Carrier or Lennox too. If price is not an issue get an American Standard unit. They are superior in a great many categories.Good luck.

We just watched a special on these, and have done research because of needing to replace ours. All the brands you mentioned are very good. All are hard working, with hardly ever a problem. Carrier came out the best in energy efficiency. So we've decided to choose Carrier for the savings on energy. Some state utilities are even offering a rebate on them. You should check with you gas and electric to see if they offer one. Hope this helped.

I've been in the business since 87 and all the major brands are about the same for reliability.Even alot of the generic brands use alot of the same components as the more expensive units, the main thing is the installation quality and the system balance,I've seen great units die in a couple yrs because they were imbalanced when installed.Make sure the tonnage and CFM are sized correctly and check on manufactures warranties before purchasing

We've had a Carrier for 14 years and we've never had any problems, besides updating ours once because the old one was not saving us enough in energy costs.
