Because before the Soviet Union existed all those countries were independent nations. The Soviet Union basically put all these other little countries into its umbrella so when the umbrella flew away all the little countries became independent again.

Countries like Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, and others were unique countries before they were conquered by the Russians (most prior to communism). Some were acquired after WWII. When the Soviet government fell, those countries chose to be independent again. Since most made the move at once, the Russian government had no choice but to let them go. They were dealing with other problems at home. Now that they are re-organized, they are refusing to let other countries leave.

The Soviet Union was the continuation of the old Tsarist Empire which was composed of several states which had been conquered during the 19th century.
The usual thing when empires come to an end is for those states to reassert their independence.

The nations that made up the Union were untied under communism.
Russia was the biggest player.
After about world war II and stuff, the union broke up and the nations that made russia look so big broke off and became democratic.

The countries under the USSR were more like territories, such as Porto Rico is to the US. After the collapse of the state capitalist central government (not to be confused with communism), each returned to their own governments as best they could.

The russian army took control of all the lands it marched through during ww2. stalin at yalta refused to surrender any of these nations and had the armies and lackies from those coutries to en force his will. both the u.s. and great britain lacked the moxie tostand up to his demands.

well, about all i do know is, before they were united into the ussr, they were individual countries.
