You right... You can only fight to prevent the other guy from murdering you and your family. In a world filled with suicide bombers and thousands of nuclear missiles aimed at your house the only method to achieve peace that has worked, is the absolute assurance that the bad guys have.... that if they come after us, we'll flatten them. When that is lost, then every two bit messiah, dictator or mafiosi figures that we're easy pickings. It worked for the Romans for a thousand years, it prevented the cold war for turning into WWIII and it would still work today.

in the 1600s the muslim armies were hell bent on conquring europe. they had taken many eastern european countries and were enroute to fight at veinna austria. the europeans defeated the turks at vienna. if they had lost, europe would be muslim right now. instead, they bottle islam up for nearly 400 years. we had total peace with islam. we beat them down to the point that we couldnt wage war against anyone. you cant fight for peace, you have to obliterate your enemy for peace.

Because historically it's been the only way in which peace has been achieved. So yes... You certainly can fight for it.
