I live in Australia and will be travelling to south africa and holland this year.

Can I use my mobile phone in these countries, does it matter what type of mobile phone I have or has it got something to do with the provider and service?

Any advice and help would be much appreciated, I am clearly clueless on the matter, thanks...

Australian phone companies provide a global roaming service. You will need to activate this before it works. Call the phone company and ask them.

In Australia most people use GSM phones, which is the European standard so will work in Holland. Though in Australia you might be using CDMA or G3, which makes things more complicated.

Global roaming is expensive and in some countries you won't be able to send text messages, so if you want to make a lot of calls you can obtain a prepaid GSM sim card in that country and use it there.

the other answers are nearly right but not quite. The prefix for an international, call is NOT always 00, it's a common mistake. Anyone making an international call from the USA or Canada can tell you that. May I suggest you dial +353 . This way if you are in any doubt what the number is, the phone will work it out for you.

your phone should work...i would suggest getting an international plan before you go though because if you don't, you will be paying some large phone bills!
