sleep paralysis, happens to me too. i will wake up and no longer than 5 min i will feel this presence in the room with me. like it is time for me to die or something, it is soooo scary man.
it has been associated with narcoplosy (sorry i can't spell)some say it is just in the mind a normal occurance of the body being in a lucid dream state.
some say alien abduction, some say it is our souls re-entering our bodies upon our waking. google the words "old hag" and "sleep paralysis"
you will get some good tibits of info on the topic.

Are you for sure that it is really 10 minutes or even forty? Sometimes you will awaken so suddenly that you whole body hasn't received the message that it's time to wake so you may be laying there awake for what feels like a few minutes when actually it is mere seconds. I see this in sleep studys. It is related to the body getting deprived of sleep cause by other underlying situation. You should see your doctor and have a sleep study to see if have sleep apnea or some other problem.
But however if it a lucid state like some have mentioned then the next time this happens tell your self that that is what it is and if so you will be able to move freely while in the lucid state and be able to do what ever you want to in a lucid dream. You may want to look up lucid dreaming. It is very hard for people to obtain a lucid state and actually control it.
I hope that I was able to help.

I think I might have the same situation. Is this when you're having a very scary dream and you can't even move or scream at all. Last time, I had dream like that was about 2 months ago but it was really scary and lasted about 10 minutes too. I don't know what causes that but very interesting that I stumbled upon this question since I do not visit this site very often. But let me know if you find out if this is a disorder...

It's called sleep paralysis. It happens to me too sometimes. Physiologically, it is closely related to the normal paralysis that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, also known as REM atonia. In that, some scientists and physicians believe it to be a "natural" effect of the sleep cycle. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain is awakened from a REM state into essentially a normal fully awake state, but the bodily paralysis is still occurring. This causes the person to be fully aware, but unable to move. In addition, this state may be accompanied by hypnagogic hallucinations.

This does sound like sleep paralysis, and pretty severe, too. It happened to me a few times, but I was only in the lucid dreaming state for maybe 20 seconds. I also had the experience of one of the other people who answered where I felt a presence in the room. It's strange, when you 'come to' in your lucid state, you almost feel like you're slowly filling into your body.
I've read that can be caused by a variety of factors:
* Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
* Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
* Increased stress
* Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
* A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams, also known as WILD[1] .
* Artificial sleeping aids, ADD medications and/or antihistamines

You need to get more regular sleep, my dear. You were way too tired that your body becomes numb during deep sleep. Your brain would wake you up before your heart stops pumping and lung stops from getting some air so you would not die. When you wake up you feel like you couldn't move, but you're so tired that you just want to keep on sleeping and you could not so you struggle trying to move and breath harder so you won't sink into that deep sleep that may cause you from breathing and eventually your heart will stop beating till you pass away as mentioned. I'm not trying to scare you, but that's what's going on. good enough, yes?

well you definitely need to go to a sleep clinic if its lasting that long. during your REM sleep you go into a paralysis to keep you from acting out your dreams, so you are completely paralyzed. but sleep deprivation could be a valid explanation for you staying paralyzed. jet lag is also another theory. actually this is the explanation psychologists give for most claims of alien abduction, most abductee's claim they are paralyzed, this could be similar to what you are experiencing. you are in a state of half sleep, your body doesnt realize that you brain has waken. well not really the body but the part of the brain controlling the paralysis. but you are fully conscious yet your brain has not told your body to get out of REM. i imagine this was completely terrified and for good reason. if this is occuring alot i would go to a sleep clinic and get tested.

This is known as Sleep Paralysis. It is not considered harmful, but it is often frightening (I've experienced it myself, and find it very disturbing). There is no known cure. I've addded a link to a site with more info.

I get that to. But I usually fall asleep right after. It is like I am up for awhile and I remember it but I can't get up. Or maybe I just don't want to. But why were you crying? Did you want to get up but couldn't? I would see your doctor.
